ZOSI Review: PoE Camera Systems, NVRs & Security Kits

Our brand-level review of the ZOSI lineup: what each product does and who it suits.

ZOSI C220 16CH 4K NVR, 10×4MP Domes, 4TB

PoE dome kit

C220 16CH 4K NVR, 10×4MP Domes, 4TB

C220 kit with a 16-channel 4K NVR, ten 4MP audio PoE domes and a 4TB drive. 100ft night vision, two-way talk and person and vehicle alerts, with six channels left free.

ZOSI C296 8CH 4K PoE, 6×5MP Pan-Tilt, 2TB

Pan-tilt PoE kit

C296 8CH 4K PoE, 6×5MP Pan-Tilt, 2TB

C296 kit with an 8-channel 4K NVR, six 5MP pan-tilt audio cameras and a 2TB drive. Each camera turns 355°, tracks movement and can sound a siren and flash its light.

This ZOSI review maps the whole ZOSI range, not a single kit: PoE NVR kits, pan-tilt systems, dome and bullet add-ons, and WiFi and solar cameras. It covers C220 fixed PoE kits, C296/C290 pan-tilt kits, C186 bullet systems, add-on cameras and wireless options, with links to the reviews, comparison, buying guide, category pages and product pages.

Most of the range is wired PoE: 4MP to 8MP cameras on 8- or 16-channel 4K recorders with a 2TB to 4TB drive already fitted, viewed through the ZOSI Smart app with no monthly fee. ZOSI packs most of a kit's spec sheet into its name, so the section on reading a kit name below is worth a minute before you compare.

Start here when you are still deciding fixed C220 domes vs C296 pan-tilt, 4MP vs 8MP kits, or wired PoE vs WiFi/solar add-ons.

What separates one ZOSI kit from another

Six things: channels, cameras in the box, resolution (2MP to 8MP), drive size, PoE or WiFi and solar power, and fixed or pan-tilt housings.

In practice:

  • Fixed C220 domes hold one view; C296 and C290 cameras pan, tilt and follow movement.
  • Analog HD-TVI cameras need a DVR, while PoE network cameras need an NVR.
  • The C105 and C186 4×5MP kits come with their own recorder, even though they use bullet-style cameras.

For the decision tree, open the buying guide. For fixed C220 vs pan-tilt C296, open the C220 Fixed Domes vs C296 Pan-Tilt: Which ZOSI PoE Kit Fits?. For the five lines in the range and the spots each one suits, see About ZOSI Security.

Featured product reviews

ZOSI C220 16CH 10×4MP kit review

A close look at the fixed-dome C220 PoE kit: 16-channel 4K NVR, ten 4MP audio domes, 4TB drive, person and vehicle detection, and app viewing with no monthly fee. Best when you want many fixed views rather than pan-tilt sweepers.

ZOSI C296 8CH 6×5MP pan-tilt kit review

A close look at the pan-tilt C296 PoE kit: 8-channel 4K NVR, six 5MP cameras that pan 355° and track, sound and light alarms, and a 2TB drive. Best when fewer cameras must cover more ground by moving.

Compare & buying guide

The C220 review covers a ten-camera fixed kit; the C296 review covers a six-camera pan-tilt kit.

Who ZOSI fits

ZOSI fits DIY homeowners and small shops who want local HDD recording with PoE cameras, shoppers comparing fixed domes vs pan-tilt coverage, and buyers adding PoE or WiFi/solar cameras to expand a perimeter. Indoor window and room cameras cover glass-mount and 360° indoor niches.

It is a weaker fit if you need professionally monitored alarm contracts, or optical zoom (the pan-tilt models use digital zoom). Check PoE port counts, drive size and weather ratings for each kit before you order.

How the PoE kits fit together

Start with the coverage job (fixed domes vs pan-tilt vs bullets), then confirm you can run Ethernet for PoE NVR kits. Only after that branch into WiFi/solar niches for windows, indoor rooms, or trench-free yards. Add-on cameras are expansion tools—not substitutes for reading a full kit title’s channel, cam count, resolution, and HDD line.

The one real trap is analog versus network. The 3K Lite kit and the HD-TVI domes are coax cameras for a DVR; everything else is PoE or WiFi. An HD-TVI camera won't run on a ZOSI PoE NVR, and a PoE camera won't run on the 3K Lite DVR.

How to read a ZOSI kit name

ZOSI puts most of a kit's spec sheet into its name. Take "C220 16CH 4K NVR, 10×4MP Domes, 4TB" as the example:

  • C220 is the camera series. In the ZOSI range, C220 kits use fixed audio cameras, C296 and C290 are pan-tilt, C186 is the bullet line, and C298 puts two lenses in one pan-tilt housing.
  • 16CH is the number of camera inputs on the recorder.
  • 4K NVR is the recorder. NVR kits run network cameras over PoE; the 3K Lite system uses a DVR with coax cables instead.
  • 10×4MP Domes means ten cameras at 4MP each, in dome housings.
  • 4TB is the hard drive that comes in the kit.

When the channel count is higher than the camera count, the difference is room to add cameras later. For working out how many channels your property needs, read NVR vs DVR: Which Recorder Do You Need.

A zero in the last column doesn't always close the door. ZOSI says an optional PoE switch takes the C290 16×8MP recorder to 32 channels, while the 3K Lite DVR has no spare input at all.

Where ZOSI footage is stored

Storage is where ZOSI's wired and wireless products part ways.

  • Wired kits record to the hard drive inside the recorder. The C220 kit pages describe remote viewing through the ZOSI Smart app and the AVSS client with no mandatory subscription, and the C186 16-channel kit's 4TB drive can be expanded to two 8TB drives.
  • The 3K Lite DVR can also feed a screen connected directly to it, so viewing on site doesn't depend on internet.
  • The C518 4K 8MP Indoor 360° PT WiFi records to a memory card: a 64GB card comes in the box, and it takes cards up to 256GB.
  • Both C298 WiFi cameras give you three places to record: a memory card, a ZOSI NVR, or the cloud. The 4MP model takes cards up to 256GB and the 4K PTZ model up to 128GB, and neither comes with a card.
  • The C291 4×4MP Solar Wireless PT cameras ship with a 32GB card and a 30-day free cloud trial; the cloud plan needs a subscription after that.
  • The C680 window cameras send push notifications with no monthly subscription.

FAQ

Is this a ZOSI review?

Yes. This is a brand-level ZOSI review. It maps PoE kits, NVR bundles, domes, bullets, and related cameras, and links to single-product reviews such as the C220 10×4MP kit and the C296 6×5MP pan-tilt kit. For one product only, open that review; for job-based picking, use the how-to-choose guide.

Do ZOSI cameras see in color at night?

Some do. The C296, C186 and C298 cameras keep color in very low light, while the C220 domes and the C290 cameras switch to infrared and record black and white, rated to 100ft.

C220 or C296 first?

Fixed multi-camera layouts: start with the C220 review. Driveways/yards that need sweep and track: start with the C296 review or the compare article.

What's the difference between HD-TVI and PoE cameras?

HD-TVI cameras are analog: they send video over coax cable to a DVR, like the 3K Lite kit. PoE cameras are network cameras that take power and video over one Ethernet cable to an NVR. The two don't mix, so match the camera to the recorder you have. For where to buy and how pricing works, see the FAQ.

Do ZOSI cameras need a subscription?

Not for the wired kits. Their product pages describe app and PC viewing with no mandatory fee, and recordings stay on the kit's own hard drive. The one paid item in the range is cloud storage for the C291 solar cameras once the 30-day trial ends, and those cameras come with a 32GB card for local storage.

Does a ZOSI kit come with a hard drive?

Yes. Every NVR and DVR kit here names its drive size, 2TB, 3TB or 4TB, and the drive is part of the kit. Add-on cameras such as the 5MP 3K Add-on PoE Dome have no recorder or drive of their own and record through a ZOSI NVR.

Will ZOSI add-on cameras work with another brand's recorder?

Check before you buy. ZOSI states that the C186 5MP PoE Audio Bullet and the C290 4K 8MP PoE PT (2-Pack) need a ZOSI PoE NVR to work: neither runs on its own or on another brand's recorder. The C290 pair's humanoid tracking also needs NVR firmware v2.0.8 or later, and each camera takes one PoE port.

Do I need a PoE switch for a ZOSI system?

Only when you want more cameras than the recorder has PoE ports for. The C296 6×5MP kit leaves two of its eight ports free and can grow to 16 channels with a PoE switch, which isn't included. The C290 16×8MP and C186 16-channel kits can reach 32 channels with one. The C220 10×4MP kit leaves six of its sixteen channels free. To compare every kit and add-on camera by channel count and camera style, see all ZOSI security camera systems on one page.

What is the ZOSI C680?

A four-pack of 2K 3MP WiFi cameras that mount on the inside of a window with hook-and-loop strips, so there's nothing to drill. It suits renters and apartments: glare reduction cuts reflections off the glass, and its F1.0 lens and starlight sensor are there to hold color in very low light. The C680 2K 3MP WiFi Window Cam (4-Pack) also sends alerts with no monthly fee and lets you mask off private areas.
